Big - starting in June

Hong sisters are amazing and well, we're lucky enough that we'll get to see two of their works this year! Their second drama starts airing in June. What I'm really excited about is seeing Gong Yoo after I last saw him as the main lead in Coffee Prince. Currently the following links are our only sources of information-

I Do, I Do - starting in June

Another one that I'm seriously looking forward to! This one also has one of my favorite actresses Kim Sun Ah, I fell in love with her performance with My Name is Kim Sam Soon and again in Scent of a Woman. This will start airing on MBC after the finale of King 2 Hearts on May 24th so basically another series which will be starting in June.
Love Rain - 2 Stars

Very typical melodrama and we've seen this same story about a million times so I just fast forward through most of the episode. Why do I even bother? Because I like Jang Geun Suk :)

This is probably the 4th or 5th Taiwanese drama that I've ever watched. Its the 2nd one that's based on a Japanese manga adaptation to live-action, the first one being Huā Yàng Shǎo Nián Shǎo Nǚ; or Hana Kimi for short. The male and female lead didn't impress me at all and in fact I ended up loving the supporting actors more. But one theme that I found in common for both of these manga adaptations was the severe lack of plot development and conclusion at the end of the series. But before I go into depth on either of these topics I'll start from the top and shift gears a little to talk about what I did like.

Pros -

1) FUNNY - I felt like I was watching the whole thing acted out the way the original author and artist had put it together through their drawings. Even the superbly outlandish parts like the bikes falling, or Gong Xi's screaming being heard miles away to terrorize the guards who keep getting in her way. Not to mention the little devil thingys that rise out of her whenever she's in demon mode. It helped to keep the tone of the show on a lighter side when it had the capacity to slip into mucky melodramatic quicksand.

2) Actor selection - GONG XI (Ivy Chen)- Keeping the characters in mind I felt like the actress chosen for this role was appropriate and the changes that she went through the story were awesome. She was really good. This drama being about acting emphasized the seriousness of acting and played quite a bit on the methodology that goes behind it from character study to immersion into a character. It wasn't like Spy Myung Wol for example, where the drama within the drama is superficial and mainly used to get the actors 'real' feelings out through overacting. The viewers can see her change with every new experience she goes through in the drama and how she's able to become a better actress for it. As audience we all learn from her experiences.I love the chemistry between her and Siwon's characters even though they're clearly not speaking the same language, their body language, or when their eyes meet, the audience can feel the air turn into ice or melt with the smiles or coo at their cute awkwardness together while we cheer them on. It's amazing to see their journey on healing each other through the course of the drama.

DU HU LIAN (Siwon) & BU PO SHANG (Donghae) - I like the way Siwon was portraying his character as cool and collected while at the same time falling/denying the fact that he was in love. I'd never seen the man act so I was deeply impressed by his work. SPECIALLY considering he's not a native Chinese speaker and the entire drama was done in Chinese. What worked for me despite the dubbing for both Donghae and Siwon was the fact that these guys were able to deliver the story with the body language so much more than just the words. At first it was really disturbing to look at, the fact that their lips were moving differently than what was being said (thus the dub) but their facial features and body language was completely coherent with the emotions and dialogue being spoken. VERY IMPRESSIVE. Donghae though better looking (in my opinion he looked like he came right out of the manga and into human form...that hair color made him look sooo good LOL), Siwon's acting skills were MILES ahead. I love the way he portrayed his character (plus I'm not so into the bad boy type with the ripped up pants and what not, I like my men in SUITS :)
Before I forget my lovely supporting actors, I loved Mr. Du! He was the most adorable manager I've ever seen (except for the one who is Dok Go Jin's manager from Greatest Love) espcially because of the level of understanding between his character and Lian's. They're more like best friends than manager and managee. LOL plus his endless attempts to get Lian and Gong Xi together are so sweet! ;p
Bianca Bai's character although at first extremely annoying becomes really lovable as the story progresses. I wish she could've gotten more screen time though considering the friendship between Qin and Gong Xi's characters which was the main focus of the first half of the show and then she goes missing as Lian comes into the picture.

Cons -

1) Lack of Development & Conclusion - Its like the screenwriters were so busy fitting in mini stories of EVERYTHING that happens in the manga into the drama that they forgot the over all plot and character development leaving everything to come to head in the last episode and then leaving the audience hanging. For the audience not only is this the worst case scenario I believe that its the WORST way to end a mini-series, especially when there is no plan for a sequel to finish up the story and bring all the different conflicts within the story to a conclusion. Yes, we understand that life is not perfect and there is no clean and neat tying up of loose ends but please at least answer most of the questions that are basic to the freaking plot!!! I understand that the main reason that couldn't be done was because the manga has not concluded and thus there is not enough material for them to conclude the series...OR they could have made the progression themselves which has been done before. Some example of that are the Korean drama Goong based on a manhwa that was still being published or Ouran Koukou Host Club in which case the screenwriters took the characters into account when they tried to resolve the questions and conflicts posed in the storyline.
2) The Unanswered/Unresolved Issues - This really ruined it for me especially because I was looking forward to Lian coming face to face with Gong Xi and telling her that he had known her from their childhood and was in fact the friend 'Corn' whom she had confided in. Definitely not enough development in their relationship as I was expecting by the end of the series. The imaginary kiss at the end left me growling because that meant that neither of them had understood/acknowledged the fact that they did like each other. We also never get to find out why in the world Lian has all the issues that he does and more than anything else why the heck he was BLONDE ten years ago?! That was the most baffling thing for me....I mean is one of his parents supposed to be American? (I haven't read the manga so I don't know the specifics). Not to mention Donghae's role as Bu Po Shang is kept in the background to such as extent that we can count the amount of times he's appeared on screen on our fingers and toes. Sad as that is we never get to see the head-to-head between Bu Po Shang and Lian. SIGH......So many things left unfinished and we literally stand right back to where we had started...Aside from the minor detail that Gong Xi doesn't care for Bu Po Shang anymore. And that's about the only resolution we receive at the end of 15 episodes. I'd have rather watched the drama that they were filming within this drama "Dark Moon" that looked more impressive. UGH.

Overall rating for this drama - If you're looking for a in between-waiting-for-new-episode-filler kind of deal then I guess its okay and if you happen to be a huge Siwon fan you'll like it. BUT if you're looking for an actual coherent storyline with well developed characters then this is definitely not your thing.
I love it, love it, LOVE IT!! It is so well made with scenes from two of my favorite dramas :) LOL not to mention I'd been watching Secret Garden while waiting for new episodes of King2Hearts to come out! So I can piece some of the dialogues together and they are superbly mashed together! Its a love triangle between Hyun Bin -> Lee Seung Gi -> Ha Ji Won (Kim Joo Won - Lee Jae Ha - Hang Ah)!!! MUST WATCH!!
Sequel to Avatar the Last AirbenderDidn't know that they had a sequel in the making! I'd actually been wondering what the creators of avatar the last airbender were up to as I rewatched season 1 and managed to stumble upon the brand new series that is actually a sequel 70 years into the future from where we left off Aang and Katara (plus friends). In the middle of watching episode one and I'm noticing the changes for the positive! The animation style has been improved drastically and its very difficult to tell it apart from Japanese anime. Not just any anime either but high class stuff. Things you might see from Hayao Miyazaki's studio gibli type animation. Very well made and defined. The environment (the streets, architecture, technology) kind of reminds me of Full Metal Alchemist and Howl's Moving Castle. There are lots of architectural elements that are pulled from real life albeit American landmarks like the Golden Bay Bridge in San Francisco as well as the Alcatrez Prison which is the new temple that Aang created.

OMG the cops are like spider man LOL ;p But instead of using spider threads they're metal benders (advanced form of earth bending). I seriously miss the silliness of Aang, Katara and Sokka though. It's heart wrenching to let them go but I really hope that this series provides just as many laughs and as amazing of a story as its predecessor because they've definitely improved other aspects of the show. Right now it just feels like there's way too many adults in the picture and everything around Korra is so tightly controlled that there's no room for fun and games like the kid's adventure that started with Aang, Katara and Sokka fumbling their way around to get Aang trained. They managed to get sidetracked so many times, with their mini adventures and got to do all the things that Aang as any 12 year old would want to do. But there is a stark difference in this series because here everything is being controlled by the adults. Which surprisingly includes an adult Aang who tried to watch over Korra by making sure that she is well trained and extremely sheltered. Now his progeny who are also adults are in charge of making sure that Korra stays in line. They've practically drawn a box around her and told her where and when to breathe. Nothing like the freedom and carefree environment in which Aang grew up. Taking his own decisions doing what he wanted when he wanted. As an adult he's made a will in which he's taken all of that away from Korra. And even though she is 5 years older than him at the very start of this series, she's lived a very regimented life always under the watch of her teachers and she knows infinitely less about the world around her.

Episode two further elaborates on how Korra is fundamentally different from Aang even though she is his reincarnation. In the first episode it is shown that Korra was able to master water, fire and earth bending as a child and pretty much on her own without getting trained by a master like Aang but we find out now that she has never once been able to air bend. She has a personality that seems like a combination of Toph and Katara being both strong mentally and physically but she isn't patient, or smooth in her movements. There is always a lot of haste, a lot of fast reflex but no contemplative skill like what Aang had mastered as a young air bending monk. What's worse is that Tenzin, one of Aang's children, is her air bending master and he's carrying out his father's will of constantly keeping Korra under surveillance. The fact that they kept her in a high security facility all her life in the South Pole doesn't help the fact that she's becoming more and more rebellious. Only Katara seems to understand what Korra's going through and let's her go saying that the time of her brother and her friends has passed on with them and its time that Korra began to take care of her world in her own way. BUT for that to happen she's going to have to understand her world first and that's not going to happen if she's constantly being guarded or kept in enclosed surroundings.

LOL this is awesome Tenzin just says there's nothing for Korra to be worried about, when she can't concentrate during meditation, because air is the element of FREEDOM....can we get any more ironic than that? The poor girl has been caged up all her life and you expect her to feel FREE??!!! ROFL she blasted her way through the 2,000 year old basic air bending exercise simulation and blew it to smithereens!!! HHAHAHHAHAH But she makes it to the bending arena (bending has become a pro sport) and here's where she meets a pair of siblings who are competing for the championship title. Interesting to see that's they've added another pair of siblings only this time they're brothers and the younger one acts a lot like Sokka did when he saw a girl he likes LOL. The older one is pretty aloof and he reminds me a lot of Zuko, his name? Mako named after the voice actor of uncle Iroh from the last series who passed away before (or after) the series was completed. The fact that Mako is an fire bender probably helps that fact. Modern styles of fighting? Nice one Korra. She's totally into moving forward with what bending and its development have to offer and in the sport of pro bending she'll get to do just that...if Tenzin lets her...not by a long shot though. Just finished the episode and I don't think he'll have a choice *pfft* Korra's one strong headed child.

This show looks extremely promising, especially since they've made so many changes with the plot and the overall flow of the story. It might even be more relatable to the audience because it includes more things that we as viewers can relate to and by that I mean the technological elements. The music is smooth and subtle as always. Classical Asian and Native American instruments, depending on the scene with an added touch of 1930's United States California. I'm in for the ride!
I've tried and tried all different kinds of things and so far nothing worked for me. Starting the first week of October my sister and I have joined weight watchers and we're both hoping that this will bring the positive change in our eating habits and lifestyles that we need. I can't base any of this comparison on the differences between the manga's story and what was kept in the dramas and not since I have read it >__< But yeah, moving on.

In my opinion, the Japanese version was able to keep the story as they had originally stated for the most part as a romantic comedy because no matter how tense the situation became, there were always elements of comedy added whether it was through dialogue or just something quirky added like the main characters facial expression or exaggerated actions. This is where the Korean version, though extremely close and much more lavishly created than its Japanese counterpart, didn't do so well. In the tough situations, the show became a melodrama of EPIC proportions, with the slow motion falling of tears or fainting. *sigh* see the pics below for what I mean.

Another thing that really bothered me about the Korean version was the fact that the character development was really, REALLY SLOOOWWWW. Ugh and I mean double UGH. It took forever to let the characters develop, which includes stuff like understanding their problems and getting over them and their relationships with each other. I mean it took Goo Jun Pyo about 6 episodes to figure that he was going to fight for and stay with Geum Jan Di, whereas the Japanese version shows this particular conflict come to an end in about 2 and half to three episodes max and moved on to the next conflict. It showed the overall growth of the characters and their conclusion as well as how each resolution impacted the characters. In the Korean version, in my opinion the biggest hurdle that Geum Jan Di overcame was her initial infatuation with Ji Hoo and but other than that, she's shown as the perfect girl with a golden character who doesn't need to change too much. Goo Jun Pyo's character does change very slowly but there is not as much development when compared to Doumiyouji. Doumiyouji's character changes drastically from the beginning to the end of the series which includes him having softer facial expressions and less fights with Makino. The other characters like Ji Hoo and Woo Bin are the most static with very minor changes and not to mention the super clinginess of Ji Hoo is more than just an eyesore (don't get me wrong, my heart aches breaks and cracks for the poor dimwitted guy but MAN UP and freaking MOVE ON) he's just ugh...

Neeways, the only character whose development I enjoyed watching was Ji Young. The Korean version did a great job of showing how his character broke out of it's playboy mold to take charge of his own life and not fall victim to his father's legacy of sleeping around with women. This guy learned from his mistakes and Ga Eul helped him fight his demons. I was thrilled to see them accept each other at the end of the drama when he comes straight to her from the airport. The Japanese version showed that the relationship for Yuki didn't go so well because it was doomed to fail as a one-sided love with no interest on Sojiro's part. They did show an initial attraction but no conclusion except for Sojiro constantly running away from her.

The ending for the Japanese version was my FAVORITE I mean talk about the excellent conclusion to an amazing story considering all the hardships that the characters had been through to get there and there was a sense of accomplishment to it. The wedding was gorgeous and Matsumoto Jun looked great with Inoue Mao. I wish that the Korean version could have brought a more clear ending other than the awkwardness at the beach with Goo Jun Pyo proposing and Ji Hoo with the other two showing up to object at the marriage. Not to mention the lack appropriate emotional expression on Geum Jan Di's face. That was my face plant moment because after all the tears and depression, not to mention the constant breaking up and hooking back up together, all I could get out of me after finishing the series was a sigh. It was more of a "Thank God it's over" rather than "That was such a beautiful ending!" moment.

So for me JAPANESE VERSION wins by a LANDSLIDE :)
Its hard enough to fathom that I'm admitting to this much less writing about it but its true and it really is important enough for me to share this. I miss my little sister.... *dramatic pause* "WHAT??!!!!" Yes, I know. I thought the same thing. Aren't little sisters supposed to be super annoying, certified to get you in trouble before they learn how to walk, and typically make a laughing stock of you in front of your friends by telling them embarrassing facts that they'd be better off not knowing? Yes they are. Mine does all of the above. But here are a few more perks added to the wonderful bond of sisterhood that we share.

Ever since she was a toddler, and God only knows why, but she learned how to speak very clearly at a very young age [so tattling was never a problem] and every time she'd see something weird or out of the ordinary she would point in that direction and mention the abnormality at the top of her lungs [she still does that I mean I've told her this a bazillion times that most people are neither deaf nor are they incapable of understanding English]. This can get really embarrassing if it occurs in a mall setting and someone with a mohawk and tattoos walks past us....The first time it happened I really didn't know what to do but hide her behind me and run for it. *sigh* Unfortunately, this is one of those habits that will not leave her with age, although I hope it does or I'm in a lot of trouble cuz I can't hide her behind me anymore [she's 5 inches taller than me].

Another wonderful habit is the daily news. She's like a news channel for her school. As soon as she sits in the car when we pick her up, till after dinner is finished [this process is typically around 3 hours if not more], she will tell us every detail of everything she has done in school that day including who she did what with, what their reaction was, what her teachers' response was and on and on and on and on..... After she's gotten everything out of her system she goes and lies on her bed and shuts herself off in a mental sanctuary where she does her homework for the next few hours. On Fridays she breaks from the routine and tries to drag everybody to the mall, Walmart or just to rent a movie from Redbox. Even if it means forcibly getting everybody to sit down and watch a movie that they probably have no interest in.

Everyone has crazy sleeping habits right? Well here's hers. She hates it when people turn on the light when she's asleep. Yeah, I know, most people probably don't like that. But here's the kicker, she's like Godzilla. She's going to get open up one eye then the other, both bloodshot and she's gonna let out this roar that will most likely make you wet your pants if your not careful. And then the insults begin. She'll make you feel like the worst human being on the planet for disturbing her sleep because you don't have the decency to be quiet and let the poor girl sleep. I understand, that's the least I can do for the child right? WRONG!! Because when she needs to do her homework and doesn't want to walk aaallll the way to rec room, the lamp right beside my head WILL stay on.

NOW let me tell you what the really weird part is....I'm missing all of these things right now. I miss seeing her just splayed across her bed doing homework, or yelling at the top of her lungs as soon as she sees me and crushing me in a bear hug without a single care for my ear drums or rib cage. I have nobody yelling at me for having the lights on as I type this post in the middle of the night. I found myself wondering many times during the day: "What's she doing right now?" "Is she going to be okay on this camping trip or whatever it is?" "She's never done any crazy outside group exercise building before?" "Cabins?? This girl is scared of ANTS and LADYBUGS for pete's sake!!!!""How is going to sleep by herself when she can't sleep when I'm doing my homework in the rec room on the same floor?" "Is she going to get along well with the other kids?" UGGHHH....I sound like a crazy parent...not just any parent either but like a super clingy one. Right now I don't even know if I'll be able to sleep properly because she isn't sleeping on her bed. God help me get some sleep tonight and keep her safe.

PS. For those of you who wish that they could get rid of your siblings, you may want to think again. Only after they leave you or you leave them will you realize how much their craziest, stupidest and most inconsiderate things actually mean to you. They are so precious exactly the way they are. I'm not saying that there can't be room for improvement though LOL.ソニア(初仁明)http://www.blogger.com/profile/05679042695764924075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919772938309909018.post-2761301785163382182011-09-15T23:38:00.000-07:002011-09-16T00:25:33.949-07:001st Drama Review EVER :) - Boys Over Flowers 꽃보다 남자Ok, so I can't be like Javabeans and be consistent about recaps or reviews but when I've dedicated several hours of my life to a singular drama, I think I may have the right to critique it LOL :) By the way just in case those of you who don't know who Javabeans is, she and her friend girlfriday are both ummm how do it put this...? Asian drama critics? enthusiasts? not sure about the exact term but yeah I love reading their reviews and keeping up with my favorite shows so just in case you're curious here's their link: http://www.dramabeans.com/ They will make you fall in love with the stuff they're talking about! Well that's how it is for me anyway and I find their reviews extremely entertaining ^___^

Aight so on to main topic of review for today! I've currently spent 25 hours of my life watching a very famous drama by the name of Boys over Flowers or Hana Yori Dango which was originally a manga in Japan written by Yoko Kamio. It is a story about a poor girl who struggles to get by in a school created for the super rich children of 1% of families that own the economies of their respective country [I say this because the storyline did so well that there were 4 drama versions aside from the animated series created in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China]. So why is this girl having a hard problem in such as amazing school? Well as you may have guessed at this point, if you've watched 2 to 3 Korean shows, that the girl is poor [this isn't your poor where you're getting by on meal tickets but close enough and of course there's always the added loan sharks coupled with the dad's bad gambling and spending habits] and she got into the school because she worked her butt off to get in with a scholarship. The bad part about this is not only the fact that she stands out but the school has a dark side that most of the super rich, super snobby parents might never have imagined. The school is controlled by 4 handsome heirs who are lovingly called the Flower Four (or F4) by their avid and often rabid fan girls. But looks are not the only things they possess. They are richer than all the other kids in their schools combined for various reasons. In the Japanese version, all 4 were heirs of major corporations but in the Korean version one was a mob boss' son and the other was the son of a famous potter. So their occupation might change but that fact remains that they have enormous amounts of dough and influence, they love it, bask in its light and flaunt it. But there is one within the F4 that holds the most influence and of course he is our main lead. His character is that of a child, spoiled rotten and a bully who doesn't see anyone but his friends as human beings worth wasting his time on, in fact he spends most of the beginning of the series trampling his way through his 'fellow classmates' like insects or pawns whichever you prefer. He is the ringleader of the school because his family helped establish it and he punishes those who dare to cross him or annoy him in the least. Anyone who gets a red card with the sign of F4 or a skull is bullied and beaten by the entire school until they leave if they ever have the unfortunate luck of coming across this guy the wrong way.

Annnnndddd here's where it gets interesting....or typical...but this is exactly what happens to our main female lead. She ends up ticking our guy off at the wrong point, which in both series was different but related to food being spilled or dropped on his very expensive, custom made shoes, which he decides to settle by humiliating the person who dropped it on him by telling her to lick his shoes clean. When our female lead refuses to do so, all hell breaks loose around her BUTTTT....she doesn't give into his bullying and instead kicks his butt in front of the entire school and then some. At which point the guy falls in love with this mad beauty who not only dares to defy him but sends him flying head over heels....LITERALLY.

So yeah in my next post I'll start by comparing the two story lines and then the individual characters in the Japanese and Korean series and what I like and disliked about them ;p Stay tuned for more! I promise you'll like the next few posts cuz I'll be including some really good looking pics from the best looking guys in the series LOL!!
My mom and I spent nearly two hours catching up over delicious coffee. We switched back and forth between English and Urdu (well most of the switching was done by me) and then in between when my mom's friend called she switched into Arabic. I just sat there and thought about how many people in the world get to experience situations like this first hand on a daily basis. Around the world there might be quite a few who have experience in bilingual households but three or more might be just baffling. Unless your parents are diplomats (^_−)−☆ it's my dream to be able to pass on and learn Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Urdu to my children. Of course English will also be part of it as well as any other language that they want to learn v(^_^v)♪<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
ソニア(初仁明)http://www.blogger.com/profile/05679042695764924075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919772938309909018.post-51155027672210769192011-09-12T12:36:00.001-07:002011-09-12T13:13:28.107-07:00Babysitting and BabiesI like babies but only till they don't know how to talk. The moment they gain the capacity to argue and say the word NO I consider them alien beings. This alien form continues for girls until they're 20 and for guys it takes an entire decade longer to be considered human again in their 30s. I hate tantrums and I can't stand babies that cry for absolutely no reason other than to flex their vocal cords and drive you insane. Sigh. So yes, as I was saying, I tend to like children that are relatively calm, easily entertained and well chubby. Kids with their cheeks hanging over their face and arms and feet like miniature Twinkie rolls are my ideal. In fact I am blessed to be taking care of two such children for the next few months and I plan on enjoying them till I'm ready to depart. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
ソニア(初仁明)http://www.blogger.com/profile/05679042695764924075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919772938309909018.post-9645053675241900882011-09-11T22:26:00.001-07:002011-09-11T22:29:50.957-07:00The Curse of the Desi dietLosing weight is so frigging difficult I don't know where to start. Desi foods of course are absolutely no help whatsoever because they only help you gain weight. Of course everything has to be cooked or fried in oil and the amount of meat we eat could make cows, chickens and whatever else we cab get our hands on extinct. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing my people. Im admitting that I'm one of them.... I'm a total carnivore and I can't have a single meal without meat with the possible exception of breakfast. So how do I go from eating chat pate foods to bland celery, digestives, and carrots? Ahhhhhhh I don't know (T_T) I don't have a clue and being able to stick to that god awful diet is a whole other problem entirely. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
ソニア(初仁明)http://www.blogger.com/profile/05679042695764924075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3919772938309909018.post-39538372793463624462011-09-11T21:57:00.001-07:002011-09-11T22:31:25.239-07:00Hello blogging world!I can't say that today is my first time blogging ever but this might be the one that works out for me :p hopefully that is LOL. I dunno I never could keep up with this consistently in fact I haven't touched some of my first blogs for over 3 years but after graduating from college I have so much free time I thought I might as well put it to some good use (^_−)−☆ Not only that but I have recently noticed that I don't have a life...zero, zip, nada... What have I been doing for the past 6 years..? No idea hopefully accomplished something or the other that will help me decide what I want to do when I grow up... Wait hasn't that already happened though? <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
ソニア(初仁明)http://www.blogger.com/profile/05679042695764924075noreply@blogger.com0
